What the RBA's data says
Average cost of acceptance: eftpos ~0.3%, Visa/Mastercard debit ~0.5%, credit ~0.9% — and RBA merchant-level data shows smaller businesses pay significantly more than larger ones. From 1 October 2026, surcharging these fees to customers is banned, and under the RBA's reforms card networks and large acquirers will have to publish their fees, with standardised merchant statements mandated from April 2027.
